Every year, on 3 December, the world marks International Day of Persons with Disabilities. This day is a powerful reminder that disability inclusion is not an add-on; it is a core principle of our mission to achieve of Health for All. For 1.3 billion persons with disabilities worldwide - 16% of the global population - this vision often remains a distant promise. Persons with disabilities continue to face profound inequities in access to quality and affordable services. Together, let us build inclusive and accessible health systems with, by and for persons with disabilities.
This side event aims to discuss the developments that have taken place in countries since the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, the challenges encountered, and possible global solutions to address these challenges. In this respect; the discussion will be guided around the following questions: What has been the contribution of CRPD and recommendations of UN human rights mechanisms for the realization of the rights of PwDs at both national and international levels on the way towards the 20th anniversary of the CRPD? What are the critical challenges in implementing CRPD at both national and international levels? What is the impact of human rights mechanisms and UN bodies on the realization of the rights of PwDs? Is there a need for a dedicated international entity, established by the UN to mainstream disability and promote the realization of the development goals for and with PwDs? The 18th Conference of States Parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (COSP18) will take place from June 10 to 12, 2025, at the UN Headquarters. Established in 2008 under Article 40 of the CRPD, COSP convenes annually to advance the rights of persons with disabilities. #Envision2030: 17 Goals to transform the World for Persons with Disabilities In September 2015, the General Assembly adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development that includes 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Building on the principle of “leaving no one behind”, the new Agenda emphasizes a holistic approach to achieving sustainable development for all. The SDGs also explicitly include disability and persons with disabilities 11 times. Disability is referenced in multiple parts of the SDGs, specifically in the parts related to education, growth and employment, inequality, accessibility of human settlements, as well as data collection and the monitoring of the SDGs. Although, the word “disability” is not cited directly in all goals, the goals are indeed relevant to ensure the inclusion and development of persons with disabilities.
