Inclusion, Support, Opportunity: Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities in the Labour Market (CRPD-COSP18 Side Event).


The side event aims to demonstrate how the participation of persons with disabilities in the labour market can become a driver of social inclusion through enhancing accessibility and innovation.

Focusing on Article 27 of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, the event will discuss how the participation of persons with disabilities in the labour market advances the enjoyment of their rights, and how it can become a driver of social inclusion through enhancing accessibility and innovation. Speakers will share their experiences from a sectoral perspective in the areas of employment of persons with disabilities, competitiveness and social security, providing an insight into the successes and challenges related to the employment of persons with disabilities, as well as its positive impacts on businesses themselves.

#Envision2030: 17 Goals to transform the World for Persons with Disabilities In September 2015, the General Assembly adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development that includes 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Building on the principle of “leaving no one behind”, the new Agenda emphasizes a holistic approach to achieving sustainable development for all. The SDGs also explicitly include disability and persons with disabilities 11 times. Disability is referenced in multiple parts of the SDGs, specifically in the parts related to education, growth and employment, inequality, accessibility of human settlements, as well as data collection and the monitoring of the SDGs. Although, the word “disability” is not cited directly in all goals, the goals are indeed relevant to ensure the inclusion and development of persons with disabilities.
