Empowering Persons with Disabilities Through Arts: Concrete Experiences for Real Inclusion (COSP18 Side Event).


The Pathological Theater is a leading therapeutic institution in Italy, nationally and internationally, providing essential support to individuals—and their families—affected by severe physical and mental disabilities.

Objectives of the side event: Through sharing of best practices and concrete examples of inclusion of persons with disabilities, the side event aims at exploring how the empowerment of persons with disabilities is meaningful through arts and cultural life by addressing four main pillars of action:

  • Participation in Cultural Life and the Arts
  • Fostering Self-Expression and Representation
  • Removing barriers to access
  • Supporting Professional Development in the Art

#Envision2030: 17 Goals to transform the World for Persons with Disabilities In September 2015, the General Assembly adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development that includes 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Building on the principle of “leaving no one behind”, the new Agenda emphasizes a holistic approach to achieving sustainable development for all. The SDGs also explicitly include disability and persons with disabilities 11 times. Disability is referenced in multiple parts of the SDGs, specifically in the parts related to education, growth and employment, inequality, accessibility of human settlements, as well as data collection and the monitoring of the SDGs. Although, the word “disability” is not cited directly in all goals, the goals are indeed relevant to ensure the inclusion and development of persons with disabilities.
